PRO After School

Description

PRO After School is a youth mentoring program that builds positive relationships between high school students and elementary/middle school students through mentoring and prevention education. Students from a local high schools and their partner elementary or middle school are matched and meet one-on-one after school where they participate in recreation, enrichment and substance abuse and violence prevention lessons. High school mentors also complete extensive trainings in mentoring, activity planning & leadership, decision making, goal setting, life skills, health & nutrition and financial literacy. PRO After School provides these trainings using youth development strategies which help teens build skills that equip them to take better advantage of opportunities in their futures.

Mentors and Mentees interact through outside activities, discussions, projects and one on one as shown below:

History

People Reaching Out has a long standing history with mentoring programs in an adult-to-youth capacity. In 2003, PRO After School was developed and launched as an innovative approach to mentoring focusing on youth as mentors and role models. PRO After School will be celebrating its fifth year in the 2007-08 school year and has been able to expand and bring programming to fourteen Sacramento area schools.
